Mercedes-Benz Celebrates 60 Years of the SL

Even after 60 years on the market, the Mercedes-Benz SL isn't showing its age - as a matter of fact, we think it looks younger than ever before. Unveiled at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2013 SL is built almost entirely out of aluminum, making it a very trim and captivating luxury car.

For the sixth generation of the SL-Class, Mercedes-Benz trimmed 275 pounds off its frame. What does this mean for you, the driver? Well, aside from the bump in fuel-economy, it translates into a more thrilling driving experience. Of course, this isn't new for this model, after all SL does stand for "super light," dating all the way back to the first model in 1952.

According to Dieter Zetsche, company chairman, "You would struggle to find a car that embodies Gottlieb Daimler's aspiration more perfectly than our new SL - the best or nothing."1 That is to say, aside from the lightweight frame, the car boasts two powertrain options, two suspension systems, two retractable hardtop options, and a slew of other optional features.

The 500 SL has a new V8 engine that pumps out 435 ponies of power and sprints from 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. The 350 SL V6 goes from 0-60 in just 5.9 seconds, .03 seconds faster than the 2011 model. Each version comes standard with a seven-speed automatic transmission with a stop-start system to enhance fuel-economy. And, not only is there an option for a glass hardtop, there's an option to get the "Magic Sky Control" hardtop, which is almost transparent but darkens to shade the sun at the push of a button. Also new this year is a windshield washing system that applies the fluid directly from the wipers, saving windshield washer fluid and preventing splashing onto the windscreen.

These are just a few of the impressive features you'll find in the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-class, set to arrive at dealerships like Gurley Leep Motor Werks this spring!
