Mercedes-Benz Recognizes "Community Stars"

Every company has to start somewhere. And in 1886, Mercedes-Benz was born after the creation of the very first petrol-powered vehicle. Fast forward 125 years, and they're one of the most widely recognized luxury automobile makers in the world. In honor of their 125th anniversary, Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) scoured the country for the best grassroots and community organizations, and awarded the top five with $25,000 each to bolster their philanthropy.
You read that right. Instead of recognizing their own achievements over the last 125 years, they turned to companies who give back to their communities, fight for what they believe in, and help those in need. By the time the application deadline had arrived, more than 183 companies had submitted sixty second videos that explained why they most deserved the awards. It's nearly impossible to choose the best-of-the-best when it comes to non-profit organizations dedicated to helping their communities, so Mercedes-Benz turned to their Facebook fans for help. Voters chose the best in five categories: youth empowerment, the arts, human services, the environment, and education.
The winners, announced early in November, are as
follows:
- Alabama Institute for the Deaf & Blind, Talladega, AL:
Provides blind, deaf, and multi-disabled children and adults education and
rehabilitation
- Camp Okizu, Novato, CA: Provides overnight camping
programs for children and families affected by cancer
- The Children's Museum of Richmond, Richmond, VA: Houses
several displays to promote children's social, emotional and physical
development, and will invest the award money in their new "Waterplay"
exhibit.
- V.A.C.C Camp, Miami, FL: Partners with the Miami
Children's Hospital to host cost-free, week-long camps for ventilation-assisted
children and their families from all over the country
- Sleepyhead Beds, Kansas City, MO: Keeps like-new/gently
used mattresses out of landfills by donating them to children who would
otherwise be sleeping on the floor, sofa, etc...
